VYBA's Race Team Program is designed to introduce sailors to the exciting world of competitive sailing in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. Our coaches focus on building a strong foundation in racing fundamentals, including starts, mark roundings, sail trim, racing tactics, sportsmanship, and the Racing Rules of Sailing, while helping sailors gain confidence both on and off the racecourse.
As sailors grow, they can continue advancing through VYBA's race teams and compete in regattas throughout Florida. For sailors whose goals extend beyond our program, we proudly support their continued development by helping them transition to larger racing programs that better match their competitive aspirations. Our goal is to help every sailor reach their full potential, wherever their sailing journey takes them.

The VYBA School Year Race Team Program is an introductory competitive sailing program designed for sailors who are ready to take the next step beyond recreational sailing. Sailors practice one to two days each week and have the opportunity to compete in regattas throughout Southwest Florida.
Our race teams include Opti Green Fleet, Opti Red/White/Blue Fleet, ILCA, and C420. Through hands-on coaching, sailors build a strong foundation in boat handling, race strategy, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the Racing Rules of Sailing while developing confidence on and off the racecourse.
Personal boats are not required. VYBA provides each sailor with a designated boat and equipment for the school year. Sailors are expected to care for and maintain their assigned equipment according to Venice Youth Boating Association standards.
For additional program policies and expectations, please review the 2025–2026 Parent Handbook.
VYBA's Race Team Program is designed to introduce sailors to the exciting world of competitive sailing in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. Whether a sailor is preparing for their first regatta or working toward more advanced competition, our coaches focus on building confidence and a strong foundation in racing fundamentals, including starts, mark roundings, sail trim, racing tactics, sportsmanship, and the Racing Rules of Sailing.
As sailors develop, they can continue advancing through VYBA's race teams and compete in regattas throughout Florida. While many sailors enjoy racing with VYBA for years, others may eventually outgrow what our program is designed to offer. When that happens, we proudly help families transition to larger racing programs that align with their sailor's goals and competitive aspirations.
Our mission is to help every sailor develop the skills, confidence, and love of the sport that will support them throughout their sailing journey—whether that journey continues with VYBA or beyond.

OPTI RWB FLEET
Competitive Sailors Ages 9-14
This fleet of sailors have raced in the International Optimist Dinghy (a single-handed sailboat) for at least a year. RWB SAILORS SHOULD HAVE SAILED IN AT LEAST THREE REGATTAS BEFORE MOVING UP FROM GREEN FLEET AND COMPLETED RACES IN THOSE REGATTAS! Please discuss with your Coach or Director before registering for RWB. The three designations within this fleet are:
White Fleet: Ages 10 and Under
Blue Fleet: Ages 11-12
Red Fleet: Ages 13-15
Sailors competing on the RWB level will find tougher competition and more challenging courses. It’s a rewarding fleet full of amazing opportunities that can extend to an international scale.
ILCA FLEET
Single Handed Sailors Ages 13+

The ILCA Class dinghy is raced competitively by men and women all over the globe. This boat has a large following with national and international regattas. As well as a strong following amongst lighter weight sailors, the ILCA is also used for youth and women's racing. The ILCA Class is best for sailors in the 110 to 140lb range and is often the next step for sailors ready to move out of the Opti class. Sailors should have experience with Opti Green / RWB before moving to Lasers.
The ILCA is a developmental team at VYBA that practices one day a week.

CLUB 420 FLEET – CAMPBELL FLEET
Competitive Sailors Ages 13+
This boat requires 2 people to sail it and has three sails: the main, the jib, and the spinnaker. In many ways, C420s are the junior version of the International 470 which competes in the Olympics. The name comes from 4.20 meters, the length of the boat. This fleet is fun, fast, and rigorous. Sailors learn to work with a teammate as skipper and crew to control all three sails and make use of the trapeze. The C420 is a boat commonly seen in competitive college teams too.
Please see our Policies and Procedures Documents pages for parent and sailor information on our programs including waivers, virus prevention policies and safety information.
