ILCA Development Team

Recommended for Sailors: 110–140 lbs

Program Overview

The ILCA (International Laser Class Association) Development Team is designed for sailors who are ready to transition beyond the Optimist class into a faster, more physically demanding single-handed sailboat. Ideal for sailors in the 110–140 lb range, this program helps athletes build the skills and confidence needed to compete in one of the world's most recognized racing classes.

Sailors continue developing advanced boat handling, sail trim, race strategy, tactical decision-making, and heavy-air boat control while refining their independence and confidence on the water. The ILCA provides an excellent pathway for sailors preparing for high school sailing and beyond.

Prerequisite: Previous experience in the Opti Green or Opti Red/White/Blue (RWB) Fleet is recommended before transitioning into the ILCA.

Equipment

Personal boats are not required. VYBA provides a designated ILCA sailboat and all necessary equipment for the school year. Sailors are responsible for the care and maintenance of their assigned equipment in accordance with Venice Youth Boating Association standards.

Regatta entry fees are not included in tuition.

Parents or guardians are responsible for their sailor while on shore during regattas. Coaches are responsible for sailors while they are on the water and will communicate with families throughout each event.

A parent meeting will be held at the beginning of the season to review the regatta schedule, expectations, and program information. Additional policies can be found in the Parent Handbook.

What to Bring

• Refillable water bottle (enough water for the entire session)
• Snack (no refrigeration available)
• U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type III Life Jacket (Personal Flotation Device) with whistle attached
• Closed-toe shoes (no Crocs or flip-flops)
• Sunscreen
