C420 BEGINNER (ages 13-18) — No experience required! Over two weeks each sailor
works with a teammate to captain and crew a Club 420 sailboat (weekends off). This course is designed for those junior sailors who want to experience sailing a double-handed boat.
The benefits of beginner 420 sailing are to ensure safety on and off the water, build confidence, learning respect for your peers and the environment, sportsmanship and developing an understanding for how double-handed boats operate and learning to work as part of a team.
Goals of this course are to learn basic 420 sailing knowledge: safety, parts of the boats, rigging/derigging, capsize/recovery, knots/lines, points of sail, casting off/landing, tacking and jibing, upwind/downwind sailing, skipper and crew positions, introduction to racecourses, teamwork, and of course having fun!
Cost: $375/sailor
Swim Requirement:
Sailors must be able to swim 50 yards. A swim test will be given on the first day.
What to Bring Each Day:
• Refillable water bottle
• Lunch and snack (no refrigeration available)
• U.S. Coast Guard–approved Type III life jacket (PFD) with whistle attached
• Closed-toe shoes (must be worn at all times — no Crocs or flip-flops on land or water)
• Sunscreen
