Venice High School Sailing Team

Six VYBA sailors who are Venice High School students are competing well in high school regattas as a new sailing team this year. Because 5 of the 6 sailors are freshmen at VHS, the outlook for great success in racing competition in the next few years ahead is very positive and exciting. The team is wearing Venice High School colors on shirts, and coaching the team is the VYBA sailing director, Bryan White. The team practices on Tuesday afternoons after school, sails with the rest of VYBA’s sailors after school on Wednesday afternoons, and again sails all day in Venice on Saturdays or elsewhere when VYBA attends youth regattas around the state.

Spring Break Week – March 13th – 17th
VYBA again is hosting a beginning sailing class during spring break week this year. Complete information may be found under “Programs” on our website.

VYBA – VSS Big Boat Day – Sunday, March 5th
Members of the Venice Sailing Squadron partner with VYBA annually for an exciting Sunday afternoon on the water for VYBA sailors and their parents. Once aboard the “big boats,” sailors are given instructions from the Captains about how everything operates on deck, and then they take a quick tour down below where they see how organized everything is on a big sailboat. After this brief education, they sail into the Gulf, and each sailor has a turn at the helm. Upon return to the Higel Park dock, VYBA provides food and refreshments to end a great day on the water. Much fun is had as adult and young sailors relate stories of their afternoon in the Gulf.

VYBA-Commodore’s Cup Regatta – Saturday, April 15th
\ In honor of all past Commodores of the Venice Yacht Club, VYBA conducts a regatta for its sailors. Afterward the sailors participate in a formal “Retreat Ceremony” beginning with a parade to the flagpole with the past Commodores where in a long-standing naval and maritime tradition the American flag is saluted, then lowered, and folded and presented to the presiding Commodore of the Venice Chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel.

Awards are presented to the winning sailors. Afterward the Commodore of the IOBG receives the Commodore’s Cup from the board chair of VYBA who then presents it on behalf of VYBA and the IOBG to the current Commodore of the yacht club. The “cup” is placed in the entrance hall of the clubhouse as a perpetual reminder of the commitment to the young sailors of VYBA by the yacht club as each past and current Commodore has had some level of involvement during their respective terms of office.

Venetian Cup Regatta – Saturday, April 29th
Hosting the best one-day regatta for youth on the west coast of Florida, the VYBA’s Venetian Cup is a fun-filled regatta day. And adults in Sun Fish and Weta sailboats are also invited too participate. Following breakfast, a skipper’s meeting, lunch on the water, awards are presented to the winning sailors in each fleet in late afternoon. Multiple Venice-based individuals and businesses sponsor the regatta.
