Expectations

Often asked is:  What can I as a parent or as a beginning sailor expect at VYBA?

Young sailors become “captains of their boats” in only a few days and long before they can drive a car or vote.

New, lasting friendships develop, as they learn a life time sport.

Youngsters learn the anatomy of a boat, how to rig and derig boats, and how to propel “their” boat where they want it to go, harnessing the power of wind and water with a sail, rudder,  and a center board.

Boys and girls quickly develop greater self-reliability, self-responsibility, and self-confidence because they are responsible for their boat, its maintenance and care, and thrill in that great burst of self-confidence as they gain sailing experience.

Becoming student coaches:  Annually several of our advanced sailors are age-qualified to become U S Sailing Coaches and enjoy teaching beginning sailing in our summer programs.  They become a major asset for beginning sailors because of their personal experience at VYBA, and they enthusiastically help in teaching sailing fundamentals.

Adopt a life philosophy:
Right side up…on the water…and in life.
